Twenty-One

“Malice.” I crouched, ready for… well, ready to be ripped apart limb from limb, but until then I wanted to look as cool as possible. It's a hero thing.

Ocelot stepped up right next to me. Instead of saying anything, she snarled like a cornered mountain lion.

And Pixel vanished.

I hope that did her some good. Last time Malice saw right through her invisibility.

Malice rushed us.

I felt Ocelot tense and she almost lunged.

She stopped when I put an arm out to block her.

Malice’s charge stopped as suddenly as it started, like he shed all the momentum of a bullet at once. Or more like someone pressed pause on the videotape.

He was right on the other side of the seven-sided shape, his foot up to the line.

When he realized we weren’t going to cross the line, he smiled.

“This wasn’t designed to keep us out.” I pointed at the thin lines. The lightning was still making a round, but with lethargic sputtering. “It was to keep Mindraker safe from you.”

“Until he could raise Caesar from the grave.” Malice smiled, the smile of a hungry lion. He paced along the perimeter. “It was all I could do to slow that process down, I was losing.”

He passed his fingers along the perimeter and sparks flew. He pulled his hand back like he accidentally touched a hot stove. “And then he was gone.” With the same fingers, he blew into them and made a poofing gesture. “Chased back into his little relic.” His eyes flicked to the dagger. “I have you to thank?” He walked the opposite way.

“Yes.” I mean, I beat Caesar’s ghost. It’s not like I’m going to brag about it, but if anyone asks, I’m telling them.

He nodded. “I’m almost done here.” He smiled like he ate the cat that ate the canary. “I will make you a deal. You kick over the dagger, the skull, and the kid, and you and your friends can stay in your little safety circle until doom comes for all I care.”

Ocelot hissed, “You can’t have the boy!” She sounded very beastial.

“What she said.” It’s important to show a united front in the face of total evil. I read that somewhere.

Malice’s lips peeled back in something that did not look like a smile. “Fine, the dagger and skull. You don’t know what to do with it and you don’t want Caesar coming back from the dead any more than I do.”

Ocelot looked at me.

It was true, the last thing I wanted was the skull and a piece of Caesar’s soul. I didn’t really have a plan, but taking a hammer to it and dumping it in the east river was what I had so far. “And what about the Gift?” Never mind the chain. I knew he wanted both.

Malice twitched his shoulders in a shrug. “Another day perhaps. If I wander back into town, we will have a talk about it.”

Yeah, that sounded like a really bad idea.

“I can see you are hesitating,” Malice said. “I have no issue with you living your life to death.
